Imodium And Breastfeeding Information in Q&A
is it safe to take imodium or pepto bismal while breastfeeding? I have a five 1/2 month old and have been sick for about a week. Does anyone know if taking imodium or similiar drugs are OK while breastfeeding?

SuzanneM replied: "Please go and ask your pharmacist this very important question, rather than asking the people who contribute to Yahoo Answers. You need to be given proper information, for the sake of your baby's health."

MetalMama replied: "My Ob/gyn only allowed me to take Milk of Magnesia or Tums while I was nursing my daughter."

belinda replied: "Pepto is aspirin-derived, so no Pepto. Have you tried eating yogurt? It can stabilize your belly. I'm not sure about Imodium, but I'll check some of my favorite resources . . . This is a general guide for meds while breastfeeding. Scroll down to the chart for a quick reference. This chart is more thorough and explicitly says that Imodium is OK. Koapectate and Imodium must have the same drug in them?"

I have a question about breastfeeding my 8 month old baby.? I know that it is safe to take imodium while breastfeeding but my question is I sometimes get diarea for days and the only way that it goes away is if I take immodium. Immodium works like magic for me. But then sometimes I do not get diarea for weeks. And sometimes I get diarea. I think I have IBS but I am not sure. What do you think?

Viola P replied: "you would have to ask your babys pediatrician to be sure."

cricket replied: "When I was pregnant my doctor told me that Imodium was safe but only in a small dose. Instead of taking the two recommended for the first dose only take one and try not to take another dose for as long as possible after. I am still breastfeeding my 7 month old and I had to take it this past weekend and nothing bad happened to her. But like I always say, when in doubt ask your doctor. It sounds like you may have IBS in which case you probably will need to make some major changes to your diet. Keep a log of what you eat and see if there is any specific food that triggers your upset stomach. Try cutting out that food and see if you get any better."

Christine replied: "It is safe to take it....check out the link from kellymom click on diarrhea medicine "

☼ Jamie ☼ replied: "Food allergies/aversions can also cause symptoms like this. A wheat allergy can cause diarrhea if you eat too much wheat (that's just one example). I'd definitely call the pediatrician's office. Here's a link that might be useful: ,,40rs,00.html"

Laura B replied: "The Imodium is indeed safe during breastfeeding. I have IBS and I breastfed for 24 months. I would go see a GI specialist to confirm this diagnosis. But in the mean time, things that were suggested for me was to eat more frequent small meals (easy to skip when you have a little one, but don't), slowly increase your fiber intake so you don't shock your system, and be careful not to get too much caffeine."

I have a question about imodium.? I am breastfeeing a 6 month old baby and I have been stressed out lately and when I stress out I get diarea. Can I take imodium while breastfeeding. I need to take imodiium about 2 times a week, 4 tablets a day. Is this going to harm my baby at all?

Tara S replied: "Only your doctor or pharmacist can tell you if it is safe..."
